Allotments available to the public after launch of two new sites at Kingsbrook in Aylesbury
Recent data indicates that up to 100,000 people are on a waiting list for a council-owned allotment. In an attempt to ease the wait time for those in Aylesbury, Barratt David Wilson Homes and Kingsbrook Parish Council have celebrated the launch of 2 new community allotment sites, comprising 102 allotment plots on-site at the housebuilder’s Kingsbrook development. The handover was attended by James Ingall, Chair of Kingsbrook Parish Council together with Daniel Poll and Nick Rowe from Barratt David Wilson Homes.
These allotments will be available to residents on a first come first serve basis through the Parish council website. The new community allotments add to the seven allotment sites already in Aylesbury and an estimated 330,000 plots currently enjoyed by green-fingered gardeners across the UK. The allotments form part of a wider wildlife and health focus at the development, with over 60% of Kingsbrook made up of open space including orchards, woodlands and a 250-acre nature reserve.
Marc Woolfe, Sales Director at Barratt David Wilson North Thames, comments, “These allotments are a fantastic addition to our development, for both our residents and the local wildlife population, providing habitats for a wide range of insects and birds. We hope the new allotments will help our residents to reduce their carbon footprint by growing their own fruit, vegetables, and plants, and to make the most of the outside space available at Kingsbrook.”
James Ingall, Chair of the Kingsbrook Parish Council, added, “Kingsbrook Parish Council is delighted to take over the allotments as part of the ongoing plan for management of the Estate. We are pleased to have already allocated over 60% of them to people who have registered. As part of the allotment programme KBPC will have a community garden with community facilities and encourage all to get involved. We look forward to working with local groups and the schools to make use of these facilities and encourage people to be outside enjoying the fresh air and learning new skills.
