Local homebuilder reveals contribution to the UK’s economic output
Local homebuilder Barratt David Wilson Homes Exeter division has built more than 500 new homes in and across Devon, Cornwall and parts of Somerset in the last financial year – of which 120 homes were affordable – contributing over £87 million to the UK’s economic output.
The achievements are highlighted in a new report, which also measures the housebuilder’s social and economic footprint in the region during 2022. This includes:
- Supporting 928 sub-contractor or supplier companies to create local employment: a total of 1,233 direct and indirect jobs due to a total spend regionally of over £86 million
- Donating over £12,000 to local charitable causes, with over 80 hours of local employee volunteering
- Reducing CO2 emissions and construction waste against targets and adopting 99% of sustainably certified timber
- Creation of 10.5 hectares of green space - equivalent to nearly 25 football pitches
- Hiring 14 graduates, apprentices and trainees on various employment programmes
- Investing nearly £16 million on physical works to benefit local communities, such as highway and environmental improvements and community facilities
- Contributing over £5 million into local contributions including Section 106 and Community Infrastructure Levy
The company also retains its strong commitment to biodiversity with hedgehog highways, bat boxes and swift nesting boxes amongst some of the features built into all its developments as a matter of course and nine sites with identified Biodiversity Net Gain requirements ahead of legislation.

The report on Barratt David Wilson Homes’ socio-economic footprint in 2022 was carried out by planning consultant Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners (NLP).
