Sheffield war memorial is unveiled ahead of Armed Forces Day
Veterans from the Royal British Legion and officials from Bradfield Parish Council gathered at David Wilson Homes’ Oughtibridge Valley development to officially unveil the Homebuilder’s war memorial following a collaborative build last year.
David Wilson Homes Yorkshire West’s Managing Director Ian Ruthven, Technical Director Mark Davis and Senior Technical Co-Ordinator Sarah Marsh, along with the site team at Oughtibridge Valley welcomed Rory Clayton and members of the Royal British Legion and Bradfield Parish Council to see the finished project.
The 5 Star Homebuilder worked in partnership with Bradfield Parish Council and the Royal British Legion to implement a bespoke area dedicated to remembering those who served and died in the war. Including a history board and memorial board, which feature the names of local men and women who served in World War I and World War II to make a lasting historical statement and ensure their bravery and commitment remains a part of the community in Oughtibridge. The entrance feature, which is made up of four steel and aluminium illustrative panels that also depict life at Oughtibridge Valley.
The war memorial is one of David Wilson Homes’ latest displays of its support to the armed forces. The Homebuilders’ Armed Forces Transition Programme helps ex-military personnel convert to a career in housebuilding and provides the technical experience, training and support needed for a career in site management. Yorkshire West Assistant Site Managers Scott Dyer and Darren Bulmer and Trainee Assistant Site Managers Molly Palmer and Martin Wood have all made the transition from the Armed Forces using the Homebuilder’s programme to oversee developments that will deliver much-needed high quality homes across the region.
In addition to this, David Wilson Homes also runs an Armed Forces Deposit Contribution scheme, which offers military servicemen and women a 5% deposit contribution of up to £15,000.
Ian Ruthven, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes Yorkshire West said: “We were delighted to welcome members of the Royal British Legion and Bradfield Parish Council to see the war memorial at Oughtibridge Valley. Remembering those who sacrificed their lives is a vital part of Oughtibridge’s history and we are honoured to have been able to implement the memorial, with their support.”
“We would welcome anyone wanting to learn more about the history of Oughtibridge to visit our development, and to take a moment to remember those dedicated in our memorial.”
Rory Clayton, from Royal British Legion added: “It was a joy to see the names of the servicemen and women from the area be commemorated at David Wilson Homes’ Oughtibridge Valley. With time, it’s easy to forget the brave individuals that fought for our country in World War I and II and this memorial will serve as a lasting reminder for generations to come.”
