A recent poll found that on average, London residents spent over £5,000 per year decorating and furnishing their homes, closely followed by the Southeast and Midlands.* But for those looking to buy their first home, transforming their space from a blank canvas into something more personal requires cash they might not have.

Shared Ownership is a Government scheme, designed as an alternative route to help buyers get onto the property ladder if they can’t afford to buy a home outright. It allows buyers to purchase a percentage share - anywhere between 25% to 75% - of a property and pay rent to L&Q on the portion they don’t own. Deposits tend to be much lower than the open market, as a mortgage is only required for the share being bought, not the full property value. Shared owners can buy additional shares in their home through the process of ‘staircasing’.
