Boost for the birds: Dandara's wood donation helps create up to 500 bird boxes
The Repair Café at Lambs Lane Primary School has benefited from a donation of wood from independent housebuilder Dandara, which will enable them to build up to 500 bird boxes for the local area.
The Repair Café at Lambs Lane Primary School is operated by a dedicated team of volunteers who run regular monthly sessions to repair broken household items in order to reduce landfill. The non-profit group provides repair services for household items and run workshops to show young how to build their own birdboxes.
Thanks to the donation of wood offcuts, The Repair Café has been able continue its service to run free workshops aimed at local schools and youth groups, catering to children aged 8 - 13. These workshops focus on teaching young people to build their own bird boxes, to take home or for use in schools or local woodlands. The children are encouraged to learn about the importance of reusing waste materials.
Billie Bachra, organiser of The Repair Café, commented: “The donation from Dandara has been immensely beneficial. It has enabled us to contribute to our aim of building up to 500 bird boxes, not only aiding the environment and local wildlife but also benefiting the community by reducing landfill waste. Through this initiative, we're instilling the ethos of rethink, reuse, reduce, rebuild, repair, and recycle in young people by using unwanted wood to create bird boxes.
“Without this donation, engaging as many children in our workshops would have been challenging it's brilliant to see a housebuilder like Dandara donating unwanted materials to local community groups rather than discarding them”.
Zoey Rampton, Head of Sales Dandara Southern, added: “Sustainability is at the core of our mission, particularly in our approach to waste management. Our decision to support The Repair Café at Lambs Lane, Spencers Wood in their bird box project, aimed at inspiring young people to repurpose waste materials, is a perfect reflection of our values. We're thrilled to see community groups promoting children's involvement in crafting new items that benefit not only the environment but also local wildlife. We’re looking forward to seeing the finished products!”
