  1. Put your right foot forward first 👣

In India, moving into a new house has several traditions surrounding it. One tradition is to step over the threshold of the new house with your right foot. The origin of this could be because many Indians believe that when you start something new, always use your right-hand side – hand, or foot, to bring you good luck.

  1. Carry a loaf of bread when entering your home 🍞

In Greek tradition, when a family is moving into a new home, the first person to enter the home should carry a loaf of bread. Doing this is believed to bless the home and to signify that the household will never know hunger or want for food. As for bread being the focus, the reason for this is because Greeks believe it's a staple food that's seen as a symbol of sustenance and nourishment.

  1. Scatter some coins 💰

As a tradition, when moving to a new house in the Philippines, many people like to scatter coins in the living room on their first day. Doing so is believed to bring prosperity and good luck in their new home.

In fact, if you're creating your new home from scratch, you could place old coins on your doorstep and foundation posts before the cement dries, as this is believed to encourage a steady flow of wealth.

  1. Stuff fennel in your keyhole 🗝️

In Celtic and European folklore, fennel is hung over the front door to prevent the devil, witches, and other evil spirits from gaining access to your home. The reasoning behind this belief is that fennel is seen as having protective or purifying properties. A modern adaptation involves placing fennel in a keyhole to block negative forces from entering your new home.

  1. Burn sage in your home 🔥

Known as "smudging", burning sage is a technique from Native American tradition that's believed to remove negative energy, spirits, or influences. It's seen as a way of promoting healing, clarity, and positive energy within your home.

  1. Exit through the front door first 🚪

An old Irish tradition says you should always exit through the same door you entered on your first day; otherwise, you're unlikely to ever feel settled. Luckily, you only have to do this the first time, and then you can exit and enter any door as you wish.

  1. Place an orange tree in a pot next to your front door 🍊

In Chinese cultures, oranges and tangerines are seen as fruits that symbolise prosperity, wealth, and good fortune. In fact, the Chinese words for "orange" and "success" sound the same (橙 chéng) - further proving the symbolic association between both. So, if you want to have good fortune, consider planting an orange tree in a pot and placing it near your front door.

  1. Sprinkle uncooked rice on your floor 🍚

Just like throwing rice at a wedding is supposed to bring prosperity to the newlyweds, the same goes for your new home. This superstition has its roots in pagan traditions and is still practised today. The symbolism of rice represents wealth, prosperity, fertility, and good health. So naturally, sprinkling rice around the home is believed to attract these positive qualities and ensure no one will go hungry under the new roof.

  1. Sweep the floors from the back to the front 🧹

After you've sprinkled uncooked rice on your floor, you'll now have some sweeping to do.  In Brazil, most people tend to sweep from the back to the front of the house. This is believed to push unwanted energies and bad luck out of the house, rather than inviting them in as you can do when sweeping to the front.
