From cast iron and warm neutrals, to smart tech products and DIY installation, Sam Carter, radiator expert at Appliances Direct, shares trends for homes in 2026 and beyond

In an era of rising renovation costs, homeowners are becoming more strategic about where they invest. Radiators are no longer just a practical necessity that is hidden behind a sofa: they’re becoming a surprisingly influential part of how homes are presented and perceived.

With buyers placing more emphasis on design details and running costs, homeowners are getting increasingly inventive with their heating choices.  From statement finishes to smarter controls, modern radiators are now seen as upgrades that can help properties stand out, sell faster.

With this in mind, Sam Carter, radiator expert at Appliances Direct shares five key radiator trends for 2026 based on internal and Google search data.

  1. Cast iron radiators are the most in-demand look for 2026

Radiators are no longer something homeowners try to hide. In 2026, they’re becoming deliberate design features, chosen as much for their colour and style as for their heat output.

Search data pulled together by Appliances Direct shows that interest in coloured cast iron radiators has increased by 267%, with searches also increasing by 179% for coloured column radiators and 175% for coloured electric radiators that offer a ‘renovated’ look.

Part of the reasoning behind this trend for 2026 is that architectural, feature radiators can instantly elevate a room, reframing how a space is perceived - especially in period homes or open-plan living areas.

  1. The rise of warm neutral radiator colours

While white remains the default choice, and grey has long been the most popular alternative, 2026 is shaping up to be the year of warm neutrals.

Searches for “beige radiator” hit their highest level this year, rising 85% year-on-year, alongside growing interest in stone, cream, and soft taupe finishes. With it’s popularity continuing to grow in 2026.

White interiors never really go out of style; their adaptability makes them truly timeless. But adding warm, neutral tones brings a huge amount of depth and softness to a space, as is reflected by surging interest in beige, stone and cream colours.

These tones sit comfortably between minimalism and warmth, offering a softer alternative to cooler greys while still feeling contemporary.

If you’re going down this route, Sam suggests, repeating those warm undertones elsewhere in the room, perhaps through brushed brass lighting trims, soft oak shelving, or fabric textures, to make the radiator feel like a considered design choice rather than an afterthought.

  1. 2026 will see a faster shift towards DIY radiator installations

Alongside changing styles and colours, how radiators are installed is also shifting, with DIY showing no signs of slowing down in 2026.

Search data reveals a clear preference for self-installation over hiring professionals. Queries linked to DIY radiator installation (such as “how to fit a radiator” or “DIY radiator installation”) attract around 34,120 monthly searches, compared to 25,450 searches for professional-led terms like “radiator installation cost” or “plumber for radiator”

In practical terms, that means homeowners are 34% more likely to search for instructions on fitting a radiator themselves than to look for a tradesperson.

This points to a strong “have-a-go” mindset in the heating market. Rising labour costs, longer waiting times for installers, and the sheer volume of step-by-step tutorials available online are all making radiator installation feel more approachable than it once did.

  1. Escalating energy costs will influence radiator design choices

As energy bills remain high, homeowners are becoming far more deliberate about how they heat their homes. In 2026, the focus is shifting away from whole-house heating towards targeted, controllable warmth, driven by both cost pressures and new technology.

The strongest signal comes from electric radiators, which generate around 240,000 searches per month on average ( peaking at 385,000 searches in November), suggesting households are opting to heat individual spaces independently, particularly extensions, loft rooms, and bathrooms, rather than relying solely on central heating.

Interest is also surging in smart heating controls, with roughly 115,000 average monthly searches for terms such as smart “radiator valves” and “Wi-Fi heating”. These searches now far outpace more generic phrases like “energy efficient radiator”, highlighting a clear shift in priorities.

Rather than efficiency in theory, homeowners want control in practice: the ability to heat rooms individually, set schedules, and avoid wasting energy on unused spaces.

  1. Aluminium radiators gain traction among design-focused homeowners

Interest in aluminium radiators is building, and the data suggests this momentum will continue into 2026. While they currently attract around 6,000 searches, their growth trajectory points to a material that’s moving steadily from niche to considered choice.

They heat up faster than steel or cast iron, making them more responsive and better suited to modern heating habits, where rooms are warmed only when needed. But it’s their design flexibility that’s driving the biggest surge in interest.

Searches for “aluminium vertical radiators” are up 23%, while “aluminium designer radiators” have increased by 75%, highlighting a shift towards statement forms and contemporary finishes. Their lightweight construction enables slimmer profiles, vertical layouts, and sharper detailing, all of which align with current preferences for clean, uncluttered interiors.
